Year 3 Spring Term Learning

6th March 2023Cathryn Henderson

In Spring year three have visited the Winter Gardens to learn about the rainforest as well as visiting church to see symbolism within the church.

In science the children have learned about the  detailed parts of a plant involved in the life cycle to accompany this they have created rainforest art in the style of Henry Rousseau.

In ICT the children have learned how to code using scratch, a topic they have very much enjoyed and excelled at.

In music the children have improvised and composed music and rhythems using Bob Marleys’ , Three Little Birds as inspitation.

During our Seal lesson we have been considering risks and how to manage them, the children have learned how to reduce risks by following steps involving thinking through the problem and taking a breath to consider the risks.

FAB Award

17th February 2023Cathryn Henderson

At Hedworthfield we are always promoting positive friendships and know that everyone in our school community is important and special. In order to celebrate all of the wonderful work we do everyday we were invited to attend the annual Friends Against Bullying (Fab) Awards.  This event was organised by the Young People’s Parliament and celebrated the work of a small selection of schools in South Tyneside.  Our school was awarded a main award in recognition of our ongoing work to encourage positive relationships.  It filled us with pride to watch some of our fabulous Year 5 children stand up on stage and present to an unknown audience.  They did an AMAZING job showcasing our wonderful work.  As part of our presentation we shared all the inspiring work that was completed in anti-bullying week and shared a poem:
What is a Friend?
A person who will listen and not condemn,
Someone on whom you can depend.
They will not flee when bad times are here.
Instead, they will be there to lend an ear.
They will think of ways to make you smile
So you can be happy for a while.
When times are good and happy thereafter,
They will be there to share the laughter.
Do not forget your friends at all,
For they pick you up when you fall.
Do not expect to just take and hold.
Give friendship back; it is pure gold.

Rainbow Flag Award

15th February 2023Cathryn Henderson

We are proud to announce that we have achieved the Rainbow Flag Award which focuses on our whole school approach to the positive inclusion and visibility of
LGBT+ people. At primary school level this means understanding that all families are different and this is amazing!

Bird Watching

15th February 2023Cathryn Henderson

This half term, our focus at forest school has been on identifying birds and how to look after them. We started by making a bird hide, using the binoculars to look for birds on the school site. Every week we have reinforced the importance of looking after the birds in the Winter and made various different bird feeders.

Learning about our Post Office

15th February 2023Cathryn Henderson

As part of our exploration work, Nursery took part in a local visit to the Post Office. Whilst walking there, we drew attention to the key features of their local community, including road names, homes and the different shops to visit.
When arriving at the Post Office, the children weighed, checked the size of their special letters and then posted them.
