Year 5 have made an excellent start to the term across all curriculum subjects, including their new topic ‘Earth and Space’. We have dived into our new class text: ‘A Firework Maker’s Daughter’ by Philip Pullman, focusing on fluency when reading aloud and learning about the context of Indonesia and the experiences of rice farmers and sulphur miners.

In Mathematics, we are practising recalling our multiplication and division facts at speed in the first 5 minutes of every lesson and we are building on our prior learning about place value using base 10 equipment and part-whole models. In English, we are studying narrative texts, beginning with ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’ by Michael Morpurgo and revising our basic skills in grammar.
We are very excited to begin this week studying Earth and Space in Science and have considered how scientists have gathered evidence about the spherical shape of the Earth over time. On Monday, we will all be logging on to the UK Space Conference 2021 for a special film event: Spaceship Earth!
As part of this year’s school council elections, lots of children planned and delivered their own speeches, expressing the importance of our school values and demonstrating excellent leadership skills. Our two worthy winners were appointed by democratic vote and the process reminded us of the importance of standing up for our beliefs and listening carefully to the voices of others. Well done on a super start to the term Year 5!
